As London Middle School opens its doors
this school year, it is hard to believe that we are beginning our 16th
year in operation. Over the past years, London has built a reputation
of applying educational
research and practices which focus on the developmental needs of all children.
We continue to ask ourselves several questions:
'What do we want our
children to know?'
'What do we want our children to be able to do when they leave our
school?'
'Should they know all of the presidents in order?'
'Should they be able to apply formulas for math and science without
a conceptual understanding?'
'Are we missing anything?'
Knowing concrete pieces of information is important. Analyzing, critiquing,
creating, and applying concrete pieces of information are also important
skills for future learning. In order to accomplish these goals, students
must be involved in challenging and engaging lessons which provide
opportunities for students to apply content area knowledge to real
life situations. Students must not be viewed as passive receivers of
information, but rather as active citizens who take responsibility
for their learning. We understand that not all students learn the same
way, have the same interests, or communicate in the same manner. It
can no longer be assumed that one best way to teach, assess, or schedule
the day exists.
We continue to challenge our teachers to utilize best practices when
delivering their lessons. On a daily basis, the teachers at Jack London
Middle School accept and meet this challenge. London Middle School has
rededicated itself to these principles which are the foundation of a
quality education for all of its students. We look forward to a wonderful
year working with our parents and students. Please do not hesitate to
contact me with questions or concerns.
