Introduction |
| Schools are very different today for our children than when we were in school. Since we are preparing today's students for their future in the 21st century, schools must be different from what they were in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Teachers today encourage students to discover and explore, "work in small groups, discuss and explain, use calculators and computers, reflect and write." Assessment of progress is based upon portfolios, projects, performance-based activities, student self-assessment, interviews, cooperative group work, etc. At the end of the trimester, teachers must translate all of this varied information into a single grade which will appear on a student's progress report. At London Middle School, we want students to develop a greater sense of responsibility for their learning, and we want parents to be more informed about their child's progress. Since a single grade does not reflect all the information which is important to a child's progress, you will receive information in two areas; content area knowledge and learner qualities.

| Learner qualities are those behaviors which enhance a student's ability
to learn. By emphasizing these qualities, we are helping students take
responsibility for their own learning as they set goals and work to improve
performance. A student who consistently works at demonstrating these Learner
Qualities will often improve his/her content area achievement at the same
time. Learner Qualities are "life skills." These are the same qualities which are essential for success in the workplace and in everyday life. By learning these behaviors now, students will be preparing for a successful future throughout their schooling and beyond. A grade of a "4" means that a student CONSISTENTLY (at least 90% of the time) meets the standard established for the learner quality area. A grade of a "3" means that a student OFTEN (between 78-89% of the time) meets the standard. A grade of a "2" means that a student is BEGINNING (between 65-77% of the time) to meet the standard. A grade of a "1" means that a student NEEDS HELP (up to 64% of the time) to meet the standard. A student may receive a grade of "0" on an individual assignment when no attempt has been made to complete the required work. A grade of "0" impacts very negatively on the overall learner quality grade when averages are computed at the end of a trimester. |
